this organization have four goals set out in the Global Agenda :
"Goal 1: Reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters.
Goal 2: Reduce the number of deaths, illnesses and impact from diseases and public health emergencies.

Goal 4: Promote respect for diversity and human dignity, and reduce intolerance, discrimination and social exclusion."
Their priorities are ;
"Improving our local, regional and international capacity to respond to disasters and public health emergencies.
Scaling up our actions with vulnerable communities in health promotion, disease prevention and disaster risk reduction.
Increasing significantly our HIV/AIDS programming and advocacy.
Renewing our advocacy on priority humanitarian issues, especially fighting intolerance, stigma and discrimination, and promoting disaster risk reduction.

The largest portion of their work is disaster relief, in which the provide assistance to over 30 million refugees and victims of natural disaster, annually. Another cornerstone of their humanitarian act is the health and community care, were they provide the most basic health services and elementary health education. Although it seems like the Red Cross might be part of the government, it actually is not at all. They do, however, operate in a partnership capacity with the canadian government. This means they address many emerging issues around the world that have an impact on humanitarian work such as the international humanitarian law. The Red Cross also works with federal, provincial and municipal governments to provide services such as disaster assistance to Canadians.
The Red Cross has provided millions of "relief" dollars to disasters around the world. They collected more then $100 million for immediate needs such as shelter and food during the 1990s. Where does all this money come from? It comes from many sources including government grants and donations through major fundraisers around the world. When a disaster strikes the Red Cross will launch an appeal for cash donations to help create relief work in that area as soon as possible.
4%. This is the percentage of people working for the organization who take home a pay cheque. So out of a work force of approximately 97 million there is about 4000 that have the luxury of a pay cheque. The nearest comparable, profitable, business of this size is Halliburton international, with about 70 000 employees and a seventy country operating range is about half of the space covered by the Red cross/crescent organization. What makes this feat all the more incredible is the annual operating income for Haliburton Intl. is approximately 5 times the budget of the aid organization.
The red cross and red crescent organization was founded over 120 years ago by the swiss as a show of their neutrality. It has since then grown to be one of the largest aid organizations in the world. The annual budget of this organization is between 200 and 218 million swiss francs per year! This amount of money is proportionate to the level of need in the particular region they are working. With such a large budget and working area the organization needs to develop ten year plans and budgets. Included in this budget plan would be the funds allocated to over 150 countries, projected donations from the public and possible crisis that will need their attention in the future.
