Violence and abuse prevention programs

The Canadian Red Cross has developed these violence and abuse prevention programs as a way to remind Canadians that abuse is a preventable tragedy. The results of violence and abuse can be devastating to a family or individual and can result in some horrifying situations. Some individuals are severely affected by such events that can result in depression, adult crime, drug abuse and most often suicide. The Canadian Red Cross has developed a series of these programs that include presentations on abuse that have now been provided in educational programs. In schools they provide these programs especially on bullying as a way to reach out to kids and let them know they should always tell an adult when they witness or become a victim to bullying. They even partnered up with Hockey Canada after former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy had told about his sexual abuse by a former coach. This goes to show that the Red Cross helps with emergencies both caused by natural disasters and human made disasters. Violence and abuse can lead to both physical and psychological injury. For more information on these programs visit www.redcross.ca.

Continued Haiti relief needed from the Red Cross

On the main website for the Red Cross there are many updated stories of the continued efforts to try to save the Haiti community. "Over the past month, the focus has been on emergency relief-medical care, clean water and the distribution of basic relief items." Although the earthquake is long over they still face many hardships ahead including Haiti's rain season which brings up to five centimeters of rain per day. This only adds to the struggles faced to recontruct the community. Around 95,000 people in the area have been provided with shelter items by Red Cross Crescent workers including tarps, tents and tools. "They have also provided as much as 1.3 million litres of clean water and digging latrines each day at 12 camps." These efforts are still not nearly enough to save the community from the other challenges it faces such as the spread of disease from the solid waste building up in the camps. The Red Cross has developed a strong commitment to helping these people to build a stronger and more resiliant community.
Recently, according to the red cross website, they have reached a goal in Mozambique. That was a goal of 400,000 beds complete with fitted mosquito nets. This would have no doubt stimulated the local economies with the uprise of healthy people returning to the work place. This would have also gotten some other people back to work in the process of ordering 400,000 beds and nets. There would have been a need for people to build them and people to send and ship the beds. at a cost of about 8.00 per net, its a very small price to pay for a much better chance at survival for many people.

The red cross organization also take a huge part in the rebuilding of many countries in which they work. These projects often do much more then rebuild communities, they stimulate entire groups of people to build and fend more for themselves. They build schools and public buildings. These in turn cause growth in the community by creating needs for all sorts of other things. So to relate it back to business you need look no further then your donation, when you give that money by way of the multiplier effect will trickle down in the areas that the red cross operates in. The money spent on these projects not only help for a short while, they help and sustain the communities that they work in for many time to come.

History of Red Cross

"As we talk about future its very impostant to know about the history of this international organization; how it started, by whom ,when and why are the some qestions that come in our minds so here is the answer."On a hot day in June, 1859, at the close of the battle of Solferino, fifteen thousand dead and wounded lay on the battle field.. There were few surgeons, and many of the wounded died before they could receive medical attention. A young Swiss, Henri Dunant, travelling through the battle area, was appalled by the carnage and the cries of the wounded. He gathered a volunteer band of women from a nearby Italian village, and under his guidance and example, they nursed the wounded. Henri Dunant wrote a pamphlet about the terrible scenes he had witnessed. He claimed that much death and suffering could be avoided if an organization were founded to protect the wounded in battle, “without distinction of nationality’.Thanks to Dunant’s humanitarian concern, the Red Cross Treaty was adopted by fourteen nations at an international conference at Geneva in 1864, and was revised in 1906. It provides for the protection, in time of war, of relief societies to be organized in various nations. The Swiss flag, with its colours reversed, was adopted as the Red Cross emblem. Now, under the Red Cross banner, the hearts of many nations unite in the service of humanity in times of war or national disaster. In every war, this banner of mercy is respected by friend and foe alike. The British Red Cross Society was founded in 1870, and incorporated in 1908. Although the British Forces have medical services of their own, in time of war the Red Cross provides necessary further assistance. "

Red cross as a Organizational view & How its Working since start

"The International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC], a private, independent group of Swiss citizens chosen by co-optation (limited to twenty-five in number), acts during war or conflict whenever intervention by a neutral body is necessary, such action constituting its special field of activity. As guardian of the Geneva Conventions and of Red Cross principles, it promotes their acceptance by governments, suggests their revision, works for further development of international humanitarian law, and recognizes new Red Cross Societies; it sends its Swiss delegates into prisoner-of-war camps, supervises repatriation, operates the Central Tracina Agency, supplies material relief, and the like. The International Red Cross Conference, which met for the first time in 1867, is the highest legislative body. It is composed of representatives of the National Societies, the League, the International Committee, and the governments that have signed the Geneva Conventions. Meeting every four to six years, it reviews Red Cross activities and the operation of the Conventions in practice, taking under consideration, whenever necessary, any suggested revision of the Conventions or the adoption of new ones. (Actual revision and adoption are matters for a diplomatic conference convened by the Swiss government in its role as the custodian of the Conventions; texts submitted to such a diplomatic conference would be prepared by the ICRC with the expert assistance and previously approved by an International Conference of the Red Cross.) Between Conferences, coordination of the work of the League with that of the Committee is ensured by the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross."

Future Efforts

The International Federation of the Red Cross 's "plan and budget 2010-2011 seeks 214 million Swiss francs in 2010 and 197 million francs in 2011 to fund humanitarian assistance programmes". As well as, the money given to individual appeals launched in response to emergencies that occur within the given year. For 2010 the International Federation wishes to reach at least 86 million people throughout the world, and asks for the continuation of donations of any kind so they can reach this goal. The IFRC has adopted a new Strategy 2020 which emphasizes goals, "to save lives, protect livelihoods, and strengthen recovery from disasters and crises, enable healthy and safe living, and promote social inclusion and a culture of non-violence and peace". The new strategy illustrates the total effort of the IFRC to tackle the major difficulties facing humanity in the near future. Through collected information and opinions of needs and weaknesses from the many different countries and communities the operate in, and the fundamental fights and freedoms which all people are permitted. "This strategy seeks to benefit all who look to Red Cross Red Crescent to help to build a more humane, dignified, and peaceful world." Family Links

The Red Cross also offers restoring family links. When disaster strikes an area and people are left homeless and suffering they are in times when family is needed the most. Some families become separated in tragedy and this program helps to re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation caused by earthquakes, war, and other disasters. This program helps people to re-connect in tough times. For more information on how they do this you can visit www.redcross.ca.

Good Topic

This is a good topic and you have lots of good information here. The only thing that you need to keep in mind is that you need to indicate where the information comes from. If the information is a direct quotation, put it in quotation marks. You don't need quotation marks if you are re-stating what the source said in your own words, but in either case, you need to indicate where the information came from.
The Red Cross also has goals of reaching the worlds youth, not only in times of need, but to empower them and provide knowledge and opportunities to grow. Currently, about 50% of the Red Cross's volunteers, consists of young people. Therefore, they have created their own section for youth, the four areas they are focused on developing are:
-Youth voices for stronger societies,
-Healthy youth make a healthy world,
-Adapting to climate change and addressing catastrophes, and
-Live our principles, celebrate our diversity, change our community.
Another sect within the Youth section of the Red Cross is the Raid Cross, who's aims at using the International Humanitarian law (IHL) for encouraging more extensive thought about human behaviour. They believe that respect for the IHL can help contain the escalation of violence, as well the destruction and suffering armed conflict creates. The law can also promote the return to using peaceful means in solving conflict, that do not include suffering and preserve human dignity. The Raid Cross is aware that youth our surrounded by violence almost daily through political or historic terms, or through the context of entertainment. The Raid Cross hopes to make adolescents aware of armed conflict and humanitarian action, thus, giving them the tools for interpreting events, news and violence in general. Though like any other program in the Red Cross that promotes disseminating international humanitarian law and creating awareness of humanitarian problems, Raid does not address the political and ideological roots of any conflict.

Although it seems like the Red Cross might be part of the government, it actually is not at all. They do, however, operate in a partnership capacity with the canadian government. This means they address many emerging issues around the world that have an impact on humanitarian work such as the international humanitarian law. The Red Cross also works with federal, provincial and municipal governments to provide services such as disaster assistance to Canadians.
The Red Cross has provided millions of "relief" dollars to disasters around the world. They collected more then $100 million for immediate needs such as shelter and food during the 1990s. Where does all this money come from? It comes from many sources including government grants and donations through major fundraisers around the world. When a disaster strikes the Red Cross will launch an appeal for cash donations to help create relief work in that area as soon as possible.
4%. This is the percentage of people working for the organization who take home a pay cheque. So out of a work force of approximately 97 million there is about 4000 that have the luxury of a pay cheque. The nearest comparable, profitable, business of this size is Halliburton international, with about 70 000 employees and a seventy country operating range is about half of the space covered by the Red cross/crescent organization. What makes this feat all the more incredible is the annual operating income for Haliburton Intl. is approximately 5 times the budget of the aid organization.
The red cross and red crescent organization was founded over 120 years ago by the swiss as a show of their neutrality. It has since then grown to be one of the largest aid organizations in the world. The annual budget of this organization is between 200 and 218 million swiss francs per year! This amount of money is proportionate to the level of need in the particular region they are working. With such a large budget and working area the organization needs to develop ten year plans and budgets. Included in this budget plan would be the funds allocated to over 150 countries, projected donations from the public and possible crisis that will need their attention in the future.
